By the Numbers: Orthodontics and Occlusal Guards
Inside Dental Technology delivers updates on digital workflows, materials, lab techniques, and innovation in dental technology through expert articles and videos.
Orthodontic and occlusal guard treatment options are part of a rapidly expanding segment of dentistry, driven in part by the increasing number of companies offering clear aligner solutions-some of which involve laboratory fabrication. IDT's sister publication Inside Dentistry surveyed 226 general practitioners about the types of orthodontic and similar services they offer. Occlusal guards (153) and clear aligners (124) were the two most common responses, followed by retainers (120), fixed braces (75), and fitting of headgear (73).
In addition to 55% of dentists surveyed offering clear aligners, 14% said they offer them more frequently than any other orthodontic services. Only 32% said they do not provide any orthodontic services.
