Changes for the New Year

On the wall in my office hangs a quotation I printed out a few years ago. I saw it while browsing through Facebook and felt that its meaning was especially pertinent at that time; it still is today. In the midst of a serious conversation/debate with a friend/colleague—which had nothing to do with the dental profession—he said, "We are just sheep and we cannot change the way things are." That statement meant so much to me, as I have devoted so much effort and thought to trying to change the wrongs that I see and following what I believe is right. I am by no means perfect but have always believed in attempting to lead by example, and though my actions. So, for me, the thought that people cannot effect positive change either in themselves or the injustices we encounter was troublesome, to say the least.
The quotation on my wall is one often attributed to Paulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist: "The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion." The simplicity of this statement, expressing that change is caused by actions and not words, has always resonated with me and perhaps does now more than ever.
As we welcome in 2022, more than ever, I believe that we are all looking forward to starting anew both personally and professionally. For me, this means accepting that our opinions should not guide our paths but rather our positive actions and examples. As the struggles of the previous 2 years are not forgotten, and should not be forgotten, I believe that a more positive outlook for change should bear upon us.
I am encouraged to learn that, by working together through these difficult times, many dentists and laboratories are busier than ever. Technologies are advancing at a rapid pace, as discussed in our cover story this month, and face-to-face meetings and events are starting to fill up with eager attendees. On a personal note, I am eager to begin the new year with plans to re-evaluate my goals, my examples, and the advancements that I set for my business with an appreciation for the accomplishments made in this past year in light of all the challenges faced. I believe this year, however, should carry more. So, while I am looking to make those professional strides, my greater hope for this year includes more inspirational and guided positive actions, including my own, for a more positive future for us all.
