Dentsply Sirona has unveiled advancements to its Primescan 2 intraoral scanner at IDS 2025, expanding its capabilities with new features aimed at improving workflow efficiency and connectivity. The updates come just six months after the scanner’s initial launch and include integrated caries detection, optimized data compression, and enhanced simulation tools.
The latest updates to Primescan 2 include a caries detection function that utilizes near-infrared and fluorescence technologies. According to the company, this feature is designed to supplement conventional diagnostic methods and enhance patient understanding of treatment needs through DS Core, Dentsply Sirona’s cloud platform.
Additionally, Primescan 2's optimized smart compression technology reduces bandwidth requirements by up to 50%, which Dentsply Sirona believes will make the scanner more accessible without requiring additional infrastructure. Another enhancement includes faster SureSmile simulations, with automatic tooth segmentation and smile simulations reportedly reducing calculation times by up to 90%.
Dentsply Sirona also introduced accessories for Primescan 2, including the Primescan 2 Cart. The cart features an ergonomic design, wireless connectivity, and a built-in battery for improved mobility. Another addition is the multi-use steel sleeve, designed to provide durability and high-level disinfection capabilities.
Primescan 2 is integrated with DS Core, allowing for real-time collaboration and automated workflows. The platform enables instant updates to enhance performance and usability.
“Primescan 2 is a big step forward for connected dentistry, not just because of its unique cloud-native capabilities, but because of how quickly we can deliver impactful innovations to our users,” said Max Milz, Group Vice President of Connected Technology Solutions at Dentsply Sirona. “With our latest updates, we are reducing bandwidth requirements, accelerating SureSmile simulations, and enhancing the scanning experience.”
Several of the new features, including caries detection and the Primescan 2 Cart, will be available in various global markets starting in April 2025, with further rollout planned throughout the year.
During IDS 2025, Dentsply Sirona is conducting a charitable initiative in partnership with Smile Train. For every Primescan 2 scan taken at the event, the company will donate €25 to support cleft surgeries, with a total donation goal of up to €100,000.
