Vyne Dental has announced an application programming interface (API) integration agreement with Open Dental Software, an open-source dental practice management system. The agreement, which is now in effect, allows Vyne Dental to utilize Open Dental’s supported APIs while working with the Open Dental team to explore future enhancements for deeper system integration.
According to the company, the collaboration is intended to give dental practices greater flexibility and improve access to clinical and financial data across systems. Vyne Dental said the integration is part of its broader strategy to reduce administrative burdens, support multiple clearinghouse options, and avoid vendor lock-in.
“The Open Dental agreement reflects our long-term vision of building an interoperable, vendor-neutral dental ecosystem that empowers providers with choice and resilience,” said Steve Roberts, CEO of Vyne Dental. “Our objective is clear: to make dental data as accessible, secure, and portable as it is in the broader healthcare system. With the adoption of open standards, practices can view complete treatment histories, improve claims submission, minimize administrative workload, and provide patients with greater transparency and control over their care.”
According to Vyne Dental, interoperability has become increasingly critical following recent disruptions in healthcare data infrastructure, such as the 2024 Change Healthcare outage. The company said the integration supports compliance with federal policies, including the 21st Century Cures Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which require healthcare providers to give patients timely and secure access to their health information.
The integration allows practices using Open Dental to streamline workflows, accelerate claims processes, and connect with additional tools and services without the need for custom development.
“There has been a great deal of noise and misinformation about what interoperability really means in dentistry,” said Paul Bernard, chief product officer at Vyne Dental. “What truly matters is creating an environment where providers are not reliant on a single clearinghouse connection and allowing providers to choose the tools that work best for their practices and their patients. That is what makes this agreement with Open Dental so important — it is a concrete step toward solving a real and pressing problem in our industry.”
The announcement comes ahead of the “Enhancing Interoperability in Dental Services” convening in Washington, DC, on June 25. The event will bring together leaders from dental and healthcare technology sectors to discuss ongoing challenges in health data exchange.
Among those attending the event are Roberts, Bernard, Vyne Dental Chief Revenue Officer Nick Rodich, and consultant Bryan Laskin, DDS. Laskin, who has advised on digital strategies in dental care, emphasized the importance of collaboration in enabling secure data access.
“The need for open data is not just a regulatory requirement, but rather a foundational strategy for modern dental care,” Laskin said. “We have the standards, we have the technology, and now we need collaboration. Agreements like this demonstrate how vendors can work together to create a future where information flows securely, patients are empowered, and practices are free to choose the solutions that best support their care.”
