Dentsply Sirona is recognizing the 40-year anniversary of the CEREC system, originally developed by Prof. Dr. Dr. Werner Mörmann and Dr.-Ing. Marco Brandestini at the University of Zurich. Since its introduction, the system has been used in clinical settings for chairside digital dentistry and has undergone continuous research and development.
The CEREC workflow supports the scanning, designing, and manufacturing of dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, veneers, and implant restorations. The process enables single-visit treatment and has recently been integrated with Dentsply Sirona’s DS Core cloud platform, allowing for digital workflow and remote manufacturing initiation.
CEREC systems are compatible with more than 60 validated materials from Dentsply Sirona and other material partners. According to the company, over 7 million crowns are milled annually using CEREC equipment. The platform's integration with DS Core is designed to centralize and digitize patient data, streamline workflow, and allow remote access to scan and design files.
With DS Core, intraoral scans can be started and stored directly in the platform, with scan data linked to the appropriate patient record. The platform also provides access to equipment usage data and generates manufacturing documentation to assist with quality assurance.
The release of the Primescan 2 scanner allows scans to be captured and uploaded to DS Core, where design work can begin immediately from any connected workstation. This workflow is intended to enable faster turnover of equipment and facilitate remote collaboration.
“As a long-time CEREC user, the ability to start every treatment from DS Core is a significant gain in efficiency for my team,” said Dr. Gertrud Fabel, a dentist in Munich, Germany. “Single-visit dentistry is already something that patients genuinely appreciate and with the patient communication canvas in DS Core, I am able to help my patients visualize their oral situation and better understand the treatment plan.”
Dentsply Sirona also emphasizes ongoing clinical education as part of its support for the CEREC system, offering both in-person and online learning through 57 education centers in 35 countries.
“What I love most about the CEREC ecosystem is the community that surrounds it,” said Dr. Mike Skramstad, a dentist from Minnesota. “That collective expertise—means every practice, no matter its size, can tap into real-time support and keep pushing the boundaries of patient care.”
The company plans to feature updates to the CEREC and CAD/CAM platforms at DS World Las Vegas 2025, scheduled for September 26-28 at the MGM Grand. The event will include hands-on demonstrations, peer discussions, and educational sessions for both new and experienced users.
