Dentsply Sirona has expanded the treatment capabilities of its SureSmile aligner system, allowing clinicians to treat malocclusions in both mixed and permanent dentition using the same aligner product and software platform. The update also introduces adjustable aligner wear protocols, enabling clinicians to prescribe wear intervals of one or two weeks based on individual patient needs.
Malocclusion affects millions of children worldwide1 and often becomes evident during the mixed dentition stage, when primary and permanent teeth are present simultaneously. Early orthodontic intervention during this developmental period may help guide jaw growth, create space for erupting teeth, and reduce the complexity of future treatment.
With the expanded indication, clinicians can use SureSmile aligners earlier in the treatment continuum without transitioning between different appliance systems. The company says the update is intended to support phased orthodontic treatment approaches while maintaining continuity within a single digital workflow.
The enhanced platform also provides flexibility in aligner wear scheduling, allowing clinicians to adjust treatment protocols as cases progress. By supporting both mixed and permanent dentition cases within the same software environment, the system may help streamline treatment planning and case management across a broader patient population.
“Orthodontic treatment is no longer just about correcting alignment - it’s about timing, prevention, and creating better outcomes earlier in a patient’s life,” said Jill Uhryniak, Group Vice President Orthodontics at Dentsply Sirona. “With these expanded SureSmile capabilities, clinicians can intervene sooner, guide development more effectively, and deliver care that is not only more efficient, but more impactful for patients and their families.”
According to Dentsply Sirona, the update is designed to support orthodontic practices managing patients at different stages of dental development while maintaining a single digital treatment platform.
