Dentsply Sirona has introduced the WaveOne® Gold Orifice Shaper, a reciprocating instrument designed for coronal flaring of the root canal and intended to complement the company's WaveOne® Gold file system. The WaveOne® Gold Orifice Shaper is now available in the United States and Canada.
According to the company, coronal flaring can improve access to the root canal system, enable more precise working length determination, and reduce apical extrusion of debris when using single-file systems. The company cited research by Maria Leon-Lopez and colleagues published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2021 regarding working length determination and research by H. S. Topçuoğlu and colleagues published in the International Endodontic Journal in 2016 regarding debris extrusion.
Dentsply Sirona said the new instrument is designed specifically for coronal flaring and integrates into the existing WaveOne Gold treatment protocol by operating with the same reciprocating motion as the rest of the system. According to the company, this allows clinicians to perform root canal preparation using a single motor setting, helping reduce the need for motor changes during treatment.
The company stated that the system offers a reduced risk of procedural errors by eliminating motor changes, 23% faster shaping time compared with procedures performed without an orifice shaper based on internal laboratory testing conducted on 30 plastic blocks, improved access to the root canal through early dentin triangle removal based on the same testing, and ease of adoption with a short learning curve based on an in vitro user evaluation involving 29 dentists using plastic blocks and extracted teeth.
The WaveOne® Gold Orifice Shaper was developed in collaboration with Wilhelm-J. Pertot, DDS, PhD, of Paris, France; Marco Martignoni, DDS, of Rome, Italy; and Julian Webber, BDS(UK), MS(USA), of London, United Kingdom. Beth Damas, DDS, and David Landwehr, DDS, clinical education lecturers at Heartland Dental, a dental service organization based in Effingham, Illinois, also supported the product's development.
Dr. Landwehr described the development process and the resulting instrument, stating: “Finally, the instrument delivers exactly what we hoped it would. In our hands-on courses, we used to have to constantly remind participants about the motor settings, but that’s no longer necessary. I’m looking forward to using it in training sessions and seeing how quickly participants realize how much simpler canal preparation becomes as a result. There's simply less to worry about.”
According to the company, initial user feedback from the in vitro evaluation indicated that users valued the ability to maintain the same motor settings throughout the procedure, as well as the instrument's use of the same heat treatment, cross section and motion as established instruments in the WaveOne Gold system.
“With the new WaveOne® Gold Orifice Shaper, we are underscoring our commitment to successful and reliable endodontic treatment,” said David Ferguson, senior vice president, global business units at Dentsply Sirona. “This valuable addition to our proven WaveOne® Gold reciprocating file system helps practitioners work with confidence.”
